Why would you call it a beautiful membrane? Spider Lilies.

Hi,

The sweetest smelling spiders have to be the spider lilies I just found! I’ve found very few things that smell better and stronger than these white flowers.

And what a surprise from the fields! These wildflowers are called spider lilies and they earn their strange name, if you ask me.

I’ve read that this is a swamp-loving species named Hymenocallis liriosme. If you’ll bear with some Greek, I’ll explain something I find fascinating.

In Greek hymen refers to a membrane and kalos is the word for beautiful.

Put them together and you get the beautiful membrane!

This was the first time I ever brought my mom flowers that I considered a little gross. Those that I picked are now sitting as the centerpiece on our dining table right now.

Keep your eyes peeled for spider lilies because they might just jump out at you.

Indy.
