Three Promises of God to Writers
These three verses have weighed on me so that I’ve put more time into reading the Bible and less time into writing.
We all have a certain amount of free time each day. How much of that free time do we dedicate to God? And how much goes to art? I feel guilty if I willingly shorten the amount of time I spend in God’s word—but I feel hopeless and useless if I cut short the time I could spend writing! I feel that this must be a struggle common to artists and all Christians. These promises are sweet and eased the anxiety in my troubled heart. I pray I rest in them and I wanted to share them with my fellow Christian writers who might stumble across this.
- “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Matthew 6:33. Be a writer who focuses first on God—and then writes later. A lifetime of writing books with no eternal value or impact is a loss. Besides, what’s the point of a miserable life spent chasing money?
- “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.” James 4:8. This is one of the dearest promises of our Savior that I know of. Are you even conscious of your Christianity? That is some closeness, and a good sign. I urge you to draw closer to God today.
- “The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.” 2 Corinthians 9:6. Do you want to reap the benefits of a life with God? I want to be more like Christ, every single day. I want to love Christ (with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength) more than I want to be a writer. How many thousands of books are worth trading for glory, honor, and eternal life (Romans 2:7)?. So I become a disciple of the Word and sow my heart into the good soil, so that I can reap the good benefits of reading Scripture and drawing into a sweeter and closer communion with my Savior.
